The tension inherent in the vulnerability of cut paper compels me- The mix of fragility and tenacity, the hanging-by-a-slender-thread-ness that amplifies drama. I use cut paper to explore the inner life of figures who navigate the nebulous edges between physical worlds and psychological states.
The cutting is meditative and satisfying. What I like is that the labor intensity of the process gives me time with my subject matter- Time to consider its weight, its mood and gesture. The lingering heightens my emotional connection to the people and things that appear in my work.
